After Israel's establishment, David Ben-Gurion was asked if he was satisfied:

Are you pleased?

His response was profound:

Ask me when the State of Israel is 75 years old. Or when the children born then no longer meet Holocaust survivors or the founding generation. At that point, assuring the rightness of our path will require redefinition, based not on what was, but on what will be

Ben-Gurion was not a prophet, but he understood history well.

In the two times in history, when Israeli sovereignty was established in the Land of Israel, it collapsed in the fourth quarter-century of its existence (between years 75 and 100). Both times – during Solomon's kingdom and the Hasmonean kingdom – internal strife weakened social resilience, allowing external enemies to destroy the Jewish state. The story of disintegration in the fourth quarter is not unique to Israeli society, over 30 countries faced or neared civil war in their fourth quarter-century.

Why It Happens

In the First Generation

There is a clear task – to establish a state. There is also a unified story – the return to Zion and the defense of the borders.

In the Second Generation

The task was to create national infrastructure.

In the Third Generation

There is a task of increasing, economic and military power while, at the same time, navigating divergence from the story of the founding of Israel. We thought we were no longer threatened from the outside and turned to wars from within. Internal conflicts emerge as groups demand the country align with their specific visions, an internal rift develops and threatens to endanger our existence.

This is the situation, which we faced on October 7th, it endangers our very existence and was exploited by our enemies.

Why did We Establish the Movement?

We recognized this danger in 2022, during the Bennett government, long before the demonstrations, judicial reform, and October 7th. The four founders of “The Fourth Quarter” realized Israel was facing one of its most severe crises in history – an internal trust crisis that could fracture Israeli society and weaken its ability to withstand external threats. This is the task that stood before them, when deciding to establish the movement: to ensure that the State of Israel prospers in the fourth quarter of its existence and reaches it 100th year, aligned with the vision of the Declaration of Independence – as a national home for the Jewish people and a model state that is a light unto nations of the world.

Building the Broad Israeli Base

The Fourth Quarter” is a democratic movement comprising citizens from all sectors of Israeli society and across the political spectrum. What unites us is our belonging to the Israeli center of gravity – while each member holds firm ideological positions, but we all recognize the need for a shared society with those holding differing views.
